End of financial year sales in Australia: what actually discounts in June
End of financial year in Australia runs on real business pressure rather than invented urgency, which makes it more reliable than most retail events.
## The mechanics
Australian businesses close their books on 30 June. Two things follow. Retailers want stock off the balance sheet before the count, and business buyers want deductible purchases inside the current tax year.
That combination produces genuine discounting in specific categories, driven by accounting rather than marketing.
## Where the real discounts land
**Vehicles**, particularly dealer stock that has been sitting. Run-out models on the previous build year discount hardest.
**Office equipment and technology**, because business buyers are actively looking for deductions and retailers know it.
**Appliances and whitegoods**, where floor stock and superseded models clear properly.
**Tools and trade equipment**, for the same deductibility reason.
## Where it is mostly noise
Fashion, groceries, and general merchandise do not have the same accounting driver. EOFY branding on those categories is usually just a sale badge.
## The instant asset write-off
For anyone running a business, the write-off threshold changes periodically and directly affects what is worth buying before 30 June. The threshold has moved several times in recent years, so check the current figure with the ATO rather than assuming last year’s applies.
This is general information rather than tax advice. Anything material is worth confirming with an accountant, particularly since the rules around eligibility and timing have specific conditions.
## New Zealand differs
New Zealand’s tax year ends 31 March, so the equivalent pressure sits three months earlier. Retailers with operations on both sides of the Tasman sometimes run Australian EOFY promotions in New Zealand where the underlying accounting logic does not apply at all.
## Timing within the period
Discounts typically deepen through June as the deadline approaches, but stock thins. The last week has the best percentages on whatever remains, which is not usually the popular models.
